More from Dr. Michael Barrett

Surgery and research are my passion; however, I also treat all of the non-surgical issues associated with the foot and ankle. I hold strong the value in rendering exhaustive conservative care prior to entertaining surgical alternatives. You will find that I am easy to talk to and more than willing to take the time to discuss your individual foot and ankle problem.
Diagnosing modalities and insight are essential in this discussion of a patient’s condition and providing a treatment plan. I have equipped my office with state of the art diagnostic equipment to be able to provide just such skills. For example, we are the only podiatry office in the Austin area that provides real-time Fluoroscopy. Fluoroscopy is an outstanding diagnostic tool in helping to identify hidden, hard to find fractures in the 28 tightly linked bones of the foot, or even to see if a sprained joint, such as an ankle sprain, is loose from a torn ligament. In addition to Fluoroscopy, both our San Antonio and Austin/Lake Travis foot and ankle clinics provide diagnostic ultrasound imaging, a completely non-invasive modality for diagnosing injuries to ligaments, tendons and, to some degree, bone and joint injuries. Our use of diagnostic ultrasound has become paramount in rendering proper, accurate diagnosis and providing for prompt, often times non-surgical, treatment for our foot and ankle patients.
With these diagnostic modalities, along with advanced training, I strive to help each of my patients reach their health goals and get them back into their game faster!
Dr. Barrett’s Involvement in Research
Using my college studies in biochemistry, I became involved in current on-going research studies testing the effectiveness of new treatments to manage post operative comfort throughout a rapid healing process. Some research I have participated in, for example, is medications which are designed to help provide more comfort for the ailments associated with Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy (DPN). Other medication studies I participated in, in a research role, are in pain control for Osteoarthritis. I have also participated with major pharmaceutical and biologics companies in the research and development of wound care technologies.
I continue to enjoy my relationship as a principle investigator with Alamo Clinical Research. As we continue to maintain our contribution to science with our role in research and the development of new pharmaceuticals and biologic applications, we will promote the health and the quality of life of our community and of society at large.
